Harlem Valley Rail Trail...

Precast Boardwalk Plans and Abutments

Rick J. Amlin, Delta Precast Project Manager

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail is an all-season paved hiking/biking trail constructed on an abandoned portion of the New York and Harlem Railroad, located in Dutchess County, NY, about 80 miles north of New York City.

Owned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP), the railroad was converted into a park in 1989, with a master plan to increase its total length to approximately 46 miles/74km.

Phase IV involves the design and construction of an eight-mile section of the trail. The new trail borders environmentally sensitive areas requiring the installation of approximately 4,100 feet of elevated boardwalks, utilizing 1,000 nine foot, three inch by four foot precast planks. The planks will be supported every 20 feet by two concrete micro-piled concrete piers. Additionally, 14 bridges with segmented retaining wall abutment systems will be constructed.

LHV Precast, Inc. contracted with Delta Precast to provide design calculations for abutments, boardwalk deck slabs, beams and backwalls, as well as PE signed layout and shop drawings.

The project is due to be completed in October 2020.
