Phoenix Labs Reinforced Radiation Shielding Walls and Slabs

Phoenix Labs has designed and manufactured the world’s strongest commercial neutron generators, providing services to medicine, defense, and energy sectors.

Wiesner Concrete contracted with Delta Precast for design services as Phoenix needed a precast concrete bunker for their new 49’W x 111’ L x 8.5’H industrial radiography facility. Through the design-build process, 4’L x 4’W x 12’H precast blocks, as well as roof panels were designed.

Alsan 100 Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer (FRP) rebar was used to provide structural support while minimizing the amount of ferrous material (activation from radiation) present in the bunker. No fly-ash was used since it can also become radioactive. The concrete had to greatly minimize the potential for activation due to high neutron and gamma radiation fields. The estimated completion is 12-18 months.
