SW Illinois Flood Protection Culvert

In the summer of 2007, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) concluded that the levees protecting a large area of Southwestern Illinios from flooding no longer met the agency’s requriements. As a result, the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council (FPD Council) was formed. Since the FPD Council’s inception, many replacement and rehabilitation projects have been completed to meet FEMA certification.

In early 2020, Delta Precast was contracted by Wieser Concrete Products, Inc to provide design computations and the review of drawings, along with a reinforcing summary for 160’ of 10’ x 10’ box culverts. This was a part of the 500-year underseepage control project in Cahokia, Illinios. The box culverts were designed to control and prevent underseepage within the levee system along the Mississippi River and DuPont Canal. Production took 24 days to complete, and included a custom corner box section and gaskets on each section to ensure water tightness. A significant dewatering system to control groundwater for the installation of the culverts was installed ahead of time. The complete levee project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
